Why Positive Thinking Makes Anxiety Worse

The Real Reason Mindset Work Isn't Working for Your Anxiety

The Loop

Your mind won't stop.

Before you've even finished one thought, it's already mapped out the worst-case version, tested every possibility, and landed somewhere you never asked it to go.

You can see it happening. You know it's not rational.

But the tightness in your chest doesn't care what you know.

So you breathe. You journal. You remind yourself of what's actually true. And it helps - until it doesn't. The anxiety doesn't leave. It just steps back for a while, waits, and returns.

And after enough rounds of this, something heavier starts to settle in underneath: Maybe this is just how my mind works. Maybe this is just who I am.

It's not. And I want to show you why.

Why the Usual Approaches Fall Short

Affirmations, reframing, visualization - these are real tools, and they do work. But they work at the level of the conscious mind. And your conscious mind only accounts for about 5% of your total mental activity.

The other 95%? That's your subconscious - running patterns it absorbed long before you had any say in the matter.

Anxiety isn't something you're choosing. It's a subconscious program - one that was likely installed as a form of protection at some point, and has been running on autopilot ever since.

When you try to think your way out of it, you're using that small 5% to argue with the powerful 95%.

It's not a fair fight. And it's why insight alone - even the kind you've worked hard for - rarely changes how you actually feel in your body.

This isn't a flaw in you. It's not a lack of discipline. The tools you've been reaching for are genuinely good - they've just been working at the wrong level.

A Different Approach Entirely

I found Inner Influencing at a point when I'd tried enough approaches to know what it felt like when something stopped going deeper.

Anxiety was one of those things. I'd worked on it, understood it, found ways to manage it. And still, it came back.

What I found in Inner Influencing was genuinely different. That precision led me to train as a Master Practitioner. It's now the core of everything I do with clients.

Inner Influencing is an established method built to work with the subconscious mind rather than around it. Where traditional tools ask the conscious mind to override what's happening beneath the surface, Inner Influencing delivers a direct instruction to the subconscious - one structured in a way it can receive and act on, without the resistance that usually blocks new ideas before they land.

It's not meditation. It's not therapy. And it's not another version of affirmations.

It's something different altogether.

The entry point uses a specific trigger phrase - "Purple Cow" - embedded in a carefully worded statement. The phrase is deliberately unusual, and that's part of how it works. It signals to the subconscious that something new is happening. One statement. Said once. And the subconscious receives a clear instruction it doesn't need to argue with.

Try It for Yourself

Read each statement below slowly - out loud if you can. Say it once, then stop. Let there be a moment of quiet before you move to the next one.

Notice whatever comes up, even if it's subtle. A softening. A small release of breath. A sense that something shifted, even if you can't quite name it yet.

Statement 1 - The Surface Pattern

"Subconscious, when I say Purple Cow, you will get rid of all the ways I feel anxious and keep me free from that from now on, and do this in a way that is natural, easy, instant and graceful. Purple Cow."

Say it once. Then pause and notice.

Statement 2 - The Hidden Layer

"Subconscious, when I say Purple Cow, you will get rid of any belief that anxiety is simply part of who I am or that I need it to stay safe, and keep me free from that from now on, and do this in a way that is natural, easy, instant and graceful. Purple Cow."

Say it once. Take a breath. Let it settle.

Statement 3 - Opening the Positive

"Subconscious, when I say Purple Cow, you will make it easy for me to feel genuinely calm and safe in my own mind and body, and keep me free from that from now on, and do this in a way that is natural, easy, instant and graceful. Purple Cow."

Say it once. Then simply rest for a moment.

What Did You Notice?

Whatever you noticed - even if it was barely there - that was your subconscious responding.

It doesn't always show up as something big. Sometimes it's just a fraction less tension in your shoulders. A thought that didn't spiral the way it usually would. A quiet that wasn't there before.

And if you've tried everything and you're arriving here a little tired and a little skeptical - that's okay. The subconscious doesn't need you to believe in it. It just needs a clear instruction.

And you've already given it three.

The Free Discovery Kit Takes You Further

What you just tried was the surface level. The Inner Influencing Discovery Kit goes deeper — it explains the science behind what just happened, gives you more tools to work with, and opens the door to clearing the older layers that keep anxiety regenerating.

It's free. It takes a few minutes. And if what you felt just now was even faintly real — this is where it goes next.
